Breakaway Training
Breakaway Skills Course
When a situation changes in seconds, confidence matters.
Most people don’t know how they’ll react when someone grabs, strikes or physically confronts them until it happens.
That’s why effective breakaway training needs to be more than watching a technique once and hoping you’ll remember it under pressure.
Our Breakaway Skills Course gives staff practical, hands-on experience in a safe and supportive environment. Learners have the opportunity to practise realistic situations, understand their options and build the confidence to respond calmly and safely if they’re ever faced with physical aggression at work.
Designed for healthcare staff, lone workers, education teams and anyone who may be at risk of physical aggression in the workplace.
The course combines practical skills with an understanding of why situations escalate, helping staff recognise risk earlier and respond appropriately before, during and after an incident.
Recognising risk before it becomes an incident
The safest physical confrontation is often the one that can be prevented.
Learners develop their understanding of:
- Common types of workplace assault and why situations can escalate
- Early warning signs, triggers and changes in behaviour that may indicate increasing risk
- Verbal de-escalation, body language and communication techniques that can help reduce tension
- Situational awareness and maintaining safer personal space
- Dynamic risk assessment and making safer decisions as situations change
- Professional responsibilities, reporting and what should happen after an incident
- Responding to incidents involving weapons, with a focus on creating distance, prioritising safety, communicating clearly and following emergency procedure
Practical skills for when distance isn’t enough
Sometimes de-escalation doesn’t work. When someone is grabbed or physically confronted, hesitation and panic can make an already difficult situation feel even more frightening, and that’s why learners don’t simply watch our techniques, they practise them.
Through guided, hands-on learning, staff develop practical skills including:
- Safer ways to avoid or defend against strikes
- Maintaining personal space and adopting safer positioning
- Disengaging safely from wrist and arm grabs
- Responding to clothing grabs
- Safely disengaging from hair grabs
- Techniques for responding to nips and bites
- Breaking away without unnecessarily escalating the situation
- Scenario-based practice designed to turn techniques into confidence
The aim isn’t to teach people to ‘fight back’, it is to give them safer options, greater confidence, and clearer understanding of how to protect themselves while reducing the risk of further escalation.

Safer Care Package
Practical training built around the realities of care.
Working in a care home or supported living service can mean dealing with situations that are complex, emotional and unpredictable.
When behaviour begins to escalate, staff need to feel confident enough to respond without losing sight of the person behind that behaviour.
Our Safer Care Package is a practical one-day course created specifically for teams working in care homes and supported living environments.
It helps staff recognise developing conflict earlier, respond more confidently to challenging behaviour and understand when, and when not, physical intervention may be appropriate.
Most importantly, the training focuses on protecting both staff and the people they support.
What your team will develop
Throughout the day, learners build their understanding and confidence around:
- Recognising early signs that behaviour may be escalating
- Understanding what may be driving distress or challenging behaviour
- Using communication and de-escalation techniques to reduce tension
- Assessing changing risks and making proportionate decisions
- Maintaining dignity and person-centred care during difficult situations
- Understanding when physical intervention may be necessary
- Using safer, proportionate interventions when other approaches have not worked
- Learning through realistic scenarios that reflect situations staff may actually encounter
We don’t believe care teams benefit from generic training that bears little resemblance to their working environment.
That’s why the emphasis is always on making learning relevant, practical and usable back in the workplace.

Give Your Staff More Than a Technique.
The real value of breakaway training isn’t what someone can demonstrate at the end of the course, it’s what they can remember when they’re frightened, under pressure, and need to make a decision quickly.
That’s why we prioritise practical learning, realistic scenarios, and time to develop confidence, without unnecessarily extending training or increasing the cost.
Not sure what level of training your team needs?
Tell us a little about your organisation and the situations your staff face, and we’ll help you identify the most appropriate training without pushing you towards a course you don’t need!
